»CATHARINA COSIN – eine Retrospektive« stellt zwei Arbeitsserien aus Catharina Cosins erster Schaffensperiode vor. Die Arbeiten aus ihrer »Berliner Bilderserie« spiegeln das Interesse der Künstlerin an Situationen des alltäglichen Lebens wider, in denen die Menschen ohne ihr Wissen zu Protagonisten in einer diskreten und wundersamen Choreographie werden, die geheimnisvolle Bezüge zwischen Farben, Formen, Räumen, Diagonalen und Rastern herstellt.

Die »Graffiti-Serie New York« stellt Arbeiten vor, die auf Frau Cosins Entdeckung der Graffiti- Kultur in New York im Jahre 1977 basieren. Sie verarbeiten unterschiedliche Elemente dieser damals neuen kulturellen Manifestation der „ausgegrenzten“ Jugend. Die Graffitiwände, die durch die ‘künstlerischen’ Aktivitäten zahlreicher junger ‘Sprayer’ in unterpriviligierten Wohnbereichen entstanden, werden in diesen Arbeiten als Hintergrund für die Entfaltung von Strassenszenen rekreiert, die von der in jenem Jahr sehr lebendigen Strassen-Performance-Kultur Manhattans inspiriert sind. Frau Cosin ist fasziniert von dem Faktum, dass Menschen mit diesen Graffiti-Wänden öffentlich interagieren, ohne sich gewahr zu werden, dass sie in ein bestimmtes Lebensgefühl integriert werden…

»Vorsicht – hinter Dir!«

Catharina Cosins künstlerische Karriere begann in Berlin und hat sich national und international entwickelt. Ausgedehnte Arbeitsaufenthalte in verschiedenen Ländern (teilweise mit Kunstpreisen oder Stipendien dotiert) führten zu einer Folge von Arbeitsserien, die das Thema ‘ORT’ im direkten oder übertragenen Sinne widerspiegeln: ein bestimmtes Land, eine Stadt, eine Zeit – ein bestimmter kultureller, gesellschaftlicher ‘Ort’.
Catharina Cosin lebt und arbeitet in New York City.
